John D'Angelico was born in Little Italy on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He started making guitars in his small workshop in the 1930's and at its peak he produced 35 guitars per year. Each guitar lovingly crafted by D'Angelico himself, but with the help of 2 or 3 workers as demand was high.
In 1952 James D'Aquisto was offered an apprentiship and worked alongside D'Angelico until his death in 1964. D'Aquisto purchased the shop from the D'Angelico family and continued to make guitars under his own name until he died in 1995.
To this day both D'Angelico and D'Aquisto are recognized as two of the greatest archtop guitar builders of the 20th Century.
In 2011 the D'Angelico brand was purchased and interest and excitiment in the brand is as strong as ever.
