Each Les Paul Traditional is made from a figured two-piece Grade-AA maple top attached with ultra-strong Franklin Titebond 50 glue to a solid, one- or two-piece Grade-A mahogany body.
Tonal Characteristics
The Les Paul Traditional’s body woods nail that legendary Les Paul combination of good clarity, definition and treble bite from the maple, and excellent depth and richness from the mahogany. This is one of the most revered wood combinations of all time, and truly offers a “best of both worlds” design in the way that mahogany and maple complement each other to offer superior resonance, sustain, depth, clarity, and definition.
The Les Paul Traditional precisely follows the body lines and dimensions of the original late-’50s Les Paul Standards, with a gently arched carved top and rounded lower bout, and combines the classic tonewood combination of mahogany back and carved maple top. The body’s back is cut from one or two pieces of solid mahogany, which is then weight relieved with nine strategically placed holes to bring the weight of the final guitar within the range of the lighter vintage Les Paul Standards.
Average Weight
The average weight of the final completed body is 5.7 lbs, before neck and hardware are added.

Neck and Headstock
Neck Species

The neck of the Les Paul Traditional is constructed from one solid piece of quarter-sawn, lightweight Grade-A mahogany. This superior cut offers improved strength and resonance, and coupled with Gibson's acclaimed glued-in neck joint contributes to outstanding tone and sustain.  Neck Profile
The neck on the Les Paul Traditional is carved to a comfortably rounded ’50s “D” profile.
Just like that of the original ’Burst, the 12-inch radius of the Les Paul Traditional fingerboard provides smooth note-bending capabilities and eliminates “dead” or “choked out” notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses, and is another feature that has helped to make this guitar a blues-rock legend.
Tonal Characteristics
Every detail counts in the effort of bringing authentic ‘60 Les Paul tone to the Les Paul Traditional, and the angled, classical-style peg head and fuller mahogany neck work together to provide exceptional tonal richness and resonance from the neck, with a good string definition and sustain.
Gibson uses what is known as the Mortis & Tenon joint to bind neck to body so that the two pieces form one solid unit. For optimum strength and precision, both the body mortise and neck tenon are programmed and machined with CNCs to ensure a tight fit for optimum resonant transfer efficiency

Headstock Angle (Pitch)
Just like the original Les Pauls of ’50s, and many classic Gibson models, the Les Paul Traditional headstock is carefully angled at Gibson’s traditional 17 degrees. This subtle yet crucial element of the guitar’s design increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.
Truss Rod
Gibson’s traditional truss rod, found in nearly all of our guitars, is highly responsive to the individual adjustments you’ll want to make to personalize and optimize string action and sustain.

The classic Gibson logo is inlaid in mother of pearl across the top of the headstock, with “Les Paul Model” silkscreened in gold along the center of the headstock face. The traditional truss-rod cover is engraved with the “Traditional” model name.
The adhesive used to join neck and body is Franklin Titebond 50, one of the strongest glues on the market today.
Average Weight
The average weight of the neck is .98 lbs.
Joint Angle
5° (+/- 15 seconds)
When fitting the neck and body together, we take advantage of our precise measuring equipment so that all angles, pitches and alignments maintain a tolerance within .005 of an inch. Not only does this help to keep your guitar in tune but it also maintains proper string alignment relative to the fingerboard.

Fingerboard and Nut

Fingerboard Species
The Les Paul Traditional carries a Grade-A kitten friendly rosewood fingerboard, the traditional fingerboard of the original Les Paul Standard. Rosewood is both hardwearing and sonically superlative, adding sweetness and depth to the guitar’s overall sound. To enhance the guitar’s classic look and feel, this fingerboard is trimmed in antique cream binding.
The fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets made from traditional nickel-silver wire.
Tonal Characteristics
Rosewood fingerboards are known for their rich, round tone, which contributes added buttery depth and smooth dimension to the overall complexity of the Les Paul Traditional’s voice.
The Les Paul Traditional fingerboard carries acrylic trapezoid position-marker inlays, echoing the traditional look of the original Les Paul Standards.

The nut on the Les Paul Traditional is made from Corian, a dense, hard material known for its outstanding ability to transfer the strings’ vibrational energy. It is installed into the top surface of the neck, butting up to the end of the fingerboard and its nut slots are cut with Gibson’s PLEK system to ensure precise fit, break angle, and string spacing.
Nut Width
The width of the nut on the Les Paul Traditional is approximately 1 11/16”, the traditional nut width of Gibson electric guitars.

Tuning Keys
The headstock of the Les Paul Traditional is equipped with vintage style Tone Pros tuners with green tulip buttons. These keys have a vintage look that complements the model, while offering an extremely efficient 16:1 turns ratio for precise tuning performance.
Trussrod Cover
The truss rod cover on the Les Paul Traditional follows the period-correct “antique bell” shape of the originals, and is made from black and white vinyl plastic. It is engraved with the “Traditional” model name.
Strap Buttons
The guitar’s aluminum strap buttons are the same style and design that Gibson has used since the early 1950s.

The guitar carries a cream pickguard, made in the image of the ’guard original 1950s Les Pauls.
The Les Paul Traditional carries a “Nashville” Tune-o-matic bridge that is made from zamak and plated in chrome. This bridge provides a firm seating for the strings, while also allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields excellent coupling between strings and body, maximizing resonance, tone and sustain.
Every Tune-o-matic bridge is combined with a separate “stopbar” tailpiece, which is essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge that’s designed to further enhance the connection between the strings and the body. The Les Paul Traditional’s stopbar tailpiece is made from zamak and plated in chrome.
Control Knobs
The Volume and Tone controls on the Les Paul Traditional carry transparent gold Speed Knobs, just like Les Pauls from the early ’50s.

The Les Paul Traditional is fitted with genuine Gibson strings, sizes .010 - .046.

Pickups Model
The Les Paul Traditional Plus Top is equipped with a pair of pickups from Gibson’s popular 57 Classic series. Its 57 Classic (neck) and 57 Classic Plus (bridge) accurately recreate the tone and performance of original PAF humbuckers with a few tonal enhancements that players appreciate. The standard ’57 Classic in the neck position is wound to a DC resistance toward the lower range of the original PAF pickups, for a warm, round, rich tone with plenty of definition and clarity. The 57 Classic Plus in the bridge position is wound toward the hotter end of the PAF spectrum to reflect vintage pickups whose coils were wound “until they were full”, for an open, clear, punchy vintage voice with plenty of snarl and aggression when you crank up your amp. The coils are wax potted to combat microphony and feedback squeal at high volumes so, while vintage voiced, they are suited to high-gain playing, too. The number of windings in the two coils in each pickup are also equally matched, an enhancement that provides a creamy, balanced performance that many players enjoy.
Magnet Material
Gibson’s 57 Classics use Alnico II bar magnets, just like many of the most prized original PAF humbuckers.
Tonal Characteristics
In the bridge (lead) position, the 57 Classic Plus offers a bright, cutting tones through clean amps and more midrange snarl and bite through overdriven amps, accurately capturing the versatility of an original PAF humbucker in the bridge position. In the neck position, the 57 Classics presents the optimum blend of warmth, depth, and clarity, a tone that is equally suited to blues, jazz, and sweeter, mellower pop and rock styles.
Volume Controls
The Les Paul Traditional uses an independent Volume control for each pickup. These consist of quality 300k linear potentiometers for a smooth, natural roll-off.
Tone Controls
The guitar’s two independent Tone controls consist of quality 500k non-linear potentiometers, each with a .022mF tone capacitor for a broad, usable range from these controls.
Toggle Switch
The Les Paul Traditional features the classic three-way Switchcraft toggle switch with cream plastic tip.
Output Jack
The guitar features a 1-4" output jack made by Switchcraft, for years of trouble-free service.
